My resources are slanted toward a homesteading lifestyle and focus on small
farms, hobby farms, or homesteading. They also emphasize free-ranging of
livestock.
The books I mention are all books that I own and have personally found to be
useful. The links are to Amazon.com.
Two online forums that I find exceptionally helpful no matter what the topic
are the Mother Earth News
forum and the Homesteading Today
forum. I've put them under Homesteading but they are also great resources
for chickens, rabbits, pigs...
I'm subscribed to several Yahoo! groups. Most of them I have configured
to send emails to my inbox. Others are more chatty and stray off topic a
lot so I have them set to not send me email, and I browse them when I
have a bit of time.

 | Magazines - I subscribe to Mother Earth News, Backwoods Home, and
BackHome; the others I occasionally refer to online.
|
 | Websites
 | Mother Earth News
Forum - small, informal, personal. My favorite forum. |
 | Homesteading Today Forum
- larger, lots of great info. |
 | West
Virginia Homesteaders (Yahoo! group) |
 | Living History Farms - check out
Farm Sites -> 1900 Horse-Powered farm |
 | Wessels
Living History Farm - educational farm that teaches about
agricultural development in the 1920s, 30s, and 40s. |
 | Mini Farm Homestead
- folks who fled Chicago to begin a homesteading lifestyle (sound
familiar?) |
 | Freecycle - not
homesteading, per se, but good for promoting a thrifty, low-waste
lifestyle. A grassroots movement to promote giving away used
things rather than filling a dump with them, and using other
peoples' unwanted items instead of paying top dollar for new. |
 | American Livestock Breed
Conservancy (ALBC) - working to protect breeds of livestock from
extinction. I think it's important to raise rare heritage
breeds when possible, to promote variety in the gene pool. |

 | Gardening
 | Books
 | How
to Grow More Vegetables... by John Jeavons. Spends a lot
of space self-promoting but still a very good book to have. |
 | Great
Garden Companions by Sally Jean Cunningham. Written in a
friendly, conversational manner. Talks down to her audience as
if she were a kindergarten teacher, but a decent reference and a
good introduction to companion planting. |
 | Square
Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew. I'm still reading this
one. It's looking very good, as all reviews I've read
indicated it would be. |
 | The
Vegetable Gardener's Bible by Edward C. Smith. My favorite
gardening book. I find myself turning to this book more than
any other single gardening book. |
 | Putting
Food By by Janet Greene. Freezing, canning, drying - you
name it, it's in here. |

 | Sugar Mountain Farm -
Walter is doing what I'd love to do, on a slightly larger
scale. Check out his blog! It's what inspired me to quit
journaling and go to a blog instead. |
 | Footsteps Farm -
they raise Tamworths on pasture, as we hope to do one day. |
 | Flying Pigs Farm -
they sell pork and have some info about raising pigs on pasture,
too. |
 | Pigs on
Pasture - The Gunthorp Farm. Similar to Flying Pigs Farm. |
 | Outdoor
Pig Production - an article by Iowa State University and the
Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. |
 | Swine Production -
basic swine production information by the University of
Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine. Commercial
slant, but excellent info. Includes quizzes to test your
learning. |
